Getting to know Marcus Freeman:

  • Marcus Freeman was officially appointed the 30th head coach in Notre Dame Football history on December 3rd, 2021.
  • At 35 years old, Marcus Freeman became the youngest Notre Dame Head Football Coach since Terry Brennan (aged 25) in the 1950s.
  • 2022 was Freeman’s first full season as head coach of Notre Dame Football, and 'The Fighting Irish’ finished the regular season with a win/loss record of 8-4.
  • Coach Freeman’s Hometown:  Huber Heights, Ohio.
  • College: Ohio State (2007, B.S.; 2011, M.S.) In 2011 Coach Freeman earned a masters degree from Ohio State in sports management.

Playing career:

Coach Freeman was quite the college football player back in the day! He played for the Ohio State Buckeyes in college, and carved out a solid collegiate career as a linebacker, which is one of the key defensive positions in American Football. Linebackers must be able to make tackles on running plays, but need to be agile and quick enough to cover wide receivers and deflect passes. It’s an incredibly challenging position that requires immense skill.

Freeman played in 51 games with Ohio State from 2004-2008, leading the Buckeyes to four conference titles, three BCS bowl games , and two trips to the College Football National Championship. In 2009, the budding linebacker played in the Senior Bowl, an event that showcases some of the best college football players in America.

With a strong collegiate career behind him, the next step for Freeman was the NFL. The former Buckeye was drafted in the fifth-round by the Chicago Bears in the 2009 NFL Draft but was later waived, meaning that other NFL teams could sign Freeman. The Ohio native had playing spells with the Buffalo Bills and Houston Texans, but unfortunately a heart condition meant that Freeman had to end his professional footballing career in 2010.

Coaching background:

After leaving the National Football League (NFL), Coach Freeman was hired by Ohio State as graduate assistant coach in 2010, and he continued to work his way up the coaching ladder. Freeman has always coached on the defensive side of the ball.

  • 2010: worked as Graduate Assistant coach at Ohio State.
  • 2011-12:  worked as linebackers coach at Kent State.
  • 2013-15: worked as linebackers coach at Purdue.
  • 2016: worked as Co/Defensive Coordinator and linebackers coach at Purdue.
  • 2017-2020: worked as Defensive Coordinator at Cincinnati.
  • 2021: Freeman entered Notre Dame as the Bob Hinton Defensive Coordinator and Linebackers Coach for Notre Dame before he eventually took on the role as Dick Corbett Head Football Coach of Notre Dame Football.

Coaching stars:

Notre Dame has a rich history of producing NFL talent on both sides of the football, and this high standard has continued under Coach Freeman.

Current Baltimore Ravens Safety Kyle Hamilton was coached under Marcus Freeman. The 6ft 4’ Safety was drafted by the Ravens in the first-round of the 2021 NFL Draft.

More recently, three standout players from the 2022 Notre Dame Football squad were drafted in the 2023 NFL Draft. All of which were coached by Marcus Freeman.

  • Tight-end Michael Mayer (Las Vegas Raiders)
  • Defensive Lineman Isaiah Foskey (New Orleans Saints)
  • Offensive Lineman Jarret Patterson (Houston Texans)

2022 season achievements:

  • In 2022, the Notre Dame defense recorded 38 total team sacks. A sack is when the defense tackles the opposing team’s quarterback. ‘The Fighting Irish’ defense also logged 10 interceptions (this occurs when possesion changes from one team to another after a passing play).
  • Won the TaxSlayer Gator Bowl by defeating the South Carolina Gamecocks with a score of 45-38. Coach Freeman has now coached in seven bowl games over the course of his career.
  • Won five games in a row at one point of the season against UNLV, Syracuse, Clemson, Navy and Boston College.
  • In week 11, the Notre Dame defense created a ‘shutout’ against Boston College with a final score of 44-0. A shutout occurs when the opposing offense is unable to score any points against the defence. The last time the Notre Dame defense had a shutout was against Georgia Tech in 2021

“I'm ready. I'm ready for this challenge, and I'm ready to lead this program to the greatest heights. The chance to lead the football program at the University of Notre Dame is an opportunity of a lifetime, and I would never take that for granted,” Coach Freeman speaking after being appointed Head Coach of Notre Dame Football in 2021.
