The History of Georgia Tech Football

Georgia Tech are one of college football’s most prestigious teams. The Yellow Jackets have won four College Football National championships in 1917, 1928, 1952, and 1990.

College Football aside, The Georgia Institute of Technology is one of the nation's top public research universities with more than 45,000 students who study in person at the main campus in Atlanta, at Georgia Tech-Europe in France, at Georgia Tech-Shenzhen in China, as well as through distance and online learning.

Nestled in the heart of Atlanta, Bobby Dodd Stadium is the home of the Yellow Jackets and seats 55,000 fans. Georgia Tech got their other nickname ‘The Yellow Jackets’ in 1905 as it was the colour that many of their fans wore to their games.

Georgia Tech have also produced some of College Football’s greatest ever coaches including John Heisman,  William Alexander and Bobby Dodd. The highly coveted Heisman Trophy, which honours the best player in all of college football, is named after the former Georgia Tech Coach.

During Heisman's time with the team, one of the Yellow Jackets' greatest traditions was born; the Rambling Reck. The current Rambling Reck is a fully restored 1930 Model A Ford, and has appeared at every home game since 1961.

Under John Heisman, the Yellow Jackets also broke a record that still stands today… The largest margin of victory in a college football game. In 1916, The Georgia Tech defeated Cumberland College with a score of 220-0. They were scoring so many points on offense that the chain crew didn’t even bother moving the chains!

Georgia Tech currently play in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) as do their 2024 Aer Lingus College Football Classic opponents Florida State University.

From Georgia Tech to the NFL

Georgia Tech have produced some of College Football’s best coaches, but what about players?

  • Georgia Tech have had at least one player drafted in the past four of the past five NFL Drafts. In 2023 Keion White was selected in the second round by the New England Patriots.
  • Hall of Fame wide receiver Calvin Johnson, and former Georgia Tech player, was selected with the second pick in the first round of the 2007 NFL Draft.
  • Three-time Super Bowl Champion Harrison Butker kicked for Georgia Tech from 2013-2016, and also featured in the 2016 Aer Lingus College Football Classic. He went on to be drafted by the Carolina Panthers before signing with the Kansas City Chiefs.
