A season that will go down in history for Iowa State University! The 2024 campaign is one that Cyclone fans, players and staff will look back on with some fond memories as they managed to break the school record by securing 11 wins in a single season.
A Strong Start for Iowa State
With the likes of quarterback Rocco Becht and wide receivers Jayden Higgins and Jaylin Noel on the roster, Iowa State were always going to be a dangerous outfit in the Big 12 Conference. To no surprise they started off strong, easing their way to a 7-0 record and racking up some big scorelines along the way. Some tough games came and ultimately on the final regular season week, Iowa State found themselves playing a familiar face in K-State. This would be the last time these two would meet before they headed to Dublin for this year's Aer Lingus College Football Classic. Both teams still had a chance to make the playoffs at this point, so the game was of huge magnitude.
It was Iowa State who came out on top with a 29-21 scoreline. Not only was this the win that guaranteed a Big 12 title game, but it also broke the schools highest ever win total up to this point.
Record Setting Cyclones
Next came a Big 12 Conference Title game vs Arizona State. It was not to be for the Cyclones, as they were beaten 45-19 by the Sun Devils at The AT&T Stadium in Texas.
Due to the great form shown throughout the season, Iowa State were rightfully granted a spot in the Pop-Tarts Bowl game in Orlando, a game that always draws attention and this year was no different. A thrilling game followed which Iowa State came out on top of, beating the Miami Hurricanes 42-41.
As well as winning The Bowl Game, this team had also broken the schools record for most wins within a regular season, clocking in a total of 11. Head Coach Matt Campbell has done a stellar job since taking over in 2015 and speaking to ESPN he explained why Iowa State Football is such a special program. "To end the season this way it's really fitting because it tell's you the character of this team. It's hard to find teams still in college football, but we've still got one in Ames, Iowa"
What's Next for Iowa State?
The next time we will see the Cyclones in action will be at their Week 0 game in Dublin for the Aer Lingus College Football Classic, and no doubt it will be a good one! The Cyclones have a tough task ahead of them with K-State looking to get a win back over them after the previous game. With thousands of fans expected to make the trip to Dublin, neither will want to see their team lose.
