The History of Florida State University

Florida State University, known as the Seminoles, will be playing their first-ever overseas football fixture in Dublin this month. The three-time National Champions are one of American college football's most widely supported teams, playing their home matches at the 79,560-capacity Doak S. Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee, Florida.

Founded in 1851, Florida State University remains the oldest continuous site of higher education in Florida. The University prides itself in having over 44,ooo students attending their campus from every florida county and 130 countries. There are a whopping 542 buildings on campus, along with 282 degree programmes for students to choose from. FSU is widely known for its criminal justice programmes and its film school.

FSU Football fielded their first American football team back in 1902, and have since gone on to win Three National Championships and have produced some of the best players to ever play the game.  FSU currently play in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) as do their 2024 Aer Lingus College Football Classic opponents Georgia Tech.

Their home stadium is known as Doak Campbell Stadium. It holds over 79,000 fans and is the second largest stadium in the ACC.  Named after Doak S. Campbell, the first president of Florida State University. The field itself is one of the best in all of college football and is managed year-round. The stadium is home to the ‘War Board’, which made its debut in 1992 and is one of the most technologically advanced scoreboard computer systems in the world!

Get ready for the The War Chant! This famous crowd tradition at FSU first occurred in 1984, and by the 1986 season, it was a stadium-wide phenomenon. Essentially, it’s tens of thousands of arms chopping back and forth to the beat of the drum, which makes for an incredible spectacle. Remember to use your right arm if you’re partaking in the Warchant, not your left!

We can’t discuss FSU football and not mention Bobby Bowden, who spent 34 years at FSU with a 315-97-4, win loss tie record. Bowden won the National Championship with FSU in 1993, which marked the programme's first National Championship.

FSU have won three national championships with their last championship success coming in 2013. Previous victories came in (1993 and 1999).
